On January 11, 1988 the new organ of the Tonhalle, Zürich, was inaugurated. Consultant was organist Jean Guillou. The instrument is build by the organ buildings companies of Kleuker and Steinmeyer. The façade was designed by H.R. Zulauf. The French organ builder Daniel Birouste was asked to replace the Swell box as the result was not satisfying. He was asked to design a swell box 'with the same effect of the Van den Heuvel swell-boxes' (!). However also this swell box did not satisfied the owner of the organ.
So finally, in 1996, Van den Heuvel was requested to dismantle the excisting swell box and to renew the whole in the unique construction as developed by Van den Heuvel. Afterwards Van den Heuvel was also requested to re-voice the reed stops and to correct individual voicing of the flue pipes. Leakage in the chest of the chamade reeds was also repaired.
